Crisis in Six Scenes is the much-anticipated Woody Allen comedy series that’s set to air on Amazon’s streaming service at the end of this month; although clocking in at only six episodes makes it seem more like an extended movie. While I expect most people have seen at least one of Allen’s movies over the years, I’m curious to see how he approaches the small screen – particularly with the greater freedom streaming services allow their creators.

The official show synopsis is as follows:

Crisis in Six Scenes is a comedy that takes place in the 1960’s during turbulent times in the United States and a middle class suburban family is visited by a guest who turns their household completely upside down.

That is typical Woody Allen. It’s easily been over a decade since I last watched one of his movies and it seems instantly familiar – full of very smart humour that makes you think “that’s funny”, but not really humour that makes you laugh out loud. Allen also looks to be playing one of his standard go-to characters – Nick the schlubbish every-man. If you’re a Woody Allen fan I expect you will enjoy this, but if you’re not it might be a bit of a slog to get through.

What do you think?

Crisis in Six Scenes‘ six-episode-long first season is set to go live on Amazon on 30 September. Written, directed by, and starring Woody Allen, it also features the likes of Rachel Brosnahan, Miley Cyrus, John Magaro & Elaine May.
