When you think about it, Spider-Man is kind of a dick. Sure, there may be an evil genius on the loose with a bad haircut and four mechanical arms of doom, but that’s no reason to make fun of the guy and his terrible fashion sense.  Still, it’s that dickish charm which makes Spidey so great, as he’s quick to throw a quip along with a faceful of what I hope is web fluid.

It’s that comedy which has helped define the character in comics, and something which newly-confirmed Spider-Man writers and Vacation writer-directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein hope to inject into the next big screen appearance of the wallcrawler.

Speaking to NPR, Daley and Goldstein confirmed they’d be writing the new Spider-Man:

Daley: We can finally acknowledge that.

Goldstein: We’ve been saying no comment for the last week.

Daley: This is the first time that we can say that we are writing it.

Goldstein: We’re thrilled.

From the sound of things, it looks like Spidey will be quick with the wisecracks. After all, when you’re an outcast in high school, having a smart mouth is kind of a natural way of getting some attention:

Vertigo

He’s a sharp kid and witty and kind of deals with the fact that he’s an outcast and a geek through humor. It is sort of the safety net for geeks like us, so I think we can totally relate to where he’s coming from. As well as the superpowers, which we also have.

And it’s that sense of humour, which Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige still wanted to see more of, as he explained earlier in the year:

We’re very excited about any number of things about Spidey and his standalone adventures. Not the least of which being the notion of his sense of humor. That when he puts that mask on in the comics, he has a nonstop wit that is almost as troublesome to the bad guys he’s fighting as his webs and agility.

Spider-Man returns to cinemas soon with a few of those zingers. He’ll be popping up in Captain America: Civil War next year, before kicking off in a new standalone flick on July 28 2017.
