James Franco is a busy, busy man. When he’s not busy writing poetry, making art, or defending his sexual virtue against the claims of Lindsay Lohan, he’s off provoking “strong and merciless” responses from North Korean dictators for his “undisguised terrorism”. And somehow in all of that, he still finds time to make movies.

One such movie is Child of God, an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel of the same name, which Franco both wrote, directed and stars in (see, busy!) and which has already made the festival rounds earlier in the year. Now it’s finally getting a wide release, and so it’s also getting a new trailer complete with all those lovely buzz words it picked up at said festivals, particularly for star Scott Haze as the unhinged Lester Ballad.

“Child of God” is about a dispossessed, violent man whose life is a disastrous attempt to exist outside the social order. Successively deprived of parents and homes and with few other ties, Ballard descends literally and figuratively to the level of a cave dweller as he falls deeper into crime and degradation.

Child of God also stars Tim Blake Nelson, Jim Parrack, Fallon Goodson, Jeremy Ambler and Vince Jolivette, and opens in limited theatres on August 1, 2014.

Awesome. Few writers have the grit of McCarthy’s writing and I think Franco has a knack for good adaptations.
