Steven Spielberg reveals what he won't do in INDIANA JONES 5

We’ve already heard from producer Frank Marshall that there will only ever be one Indiana Jones. And that’s really the way it should be as nobody could ever replace Harrison Ford in the role of the whip-cracking archaeologist adventurer (Sorry, Chris Pratt, not even you despite how good your case is). But at 73-years old, Ford clearly can’t keep doing this forever. In fact, I think it’s safe to say the upcoming Indiana Jones 5 will probably be the last time we see the character on screen. Probably. Maybe.

I’m adding those doubts because while chatting to THR in an extensive interview about his career, director Steven Spielberg spoke about Indy 5 and made a promise regarding the character’s fate:

“I think this one is straight down the pike for the fans. The one thing I will tell you is I’m not killing off Harrison [Ford] at the end of it.”

Phew. Close one, I guess. Especially considering how [STAR WARS SPOILER ALERT] Ford’s other iconic role of Han Solo bit the bullet – or rather, lightsaber – in The Force Awakens and will now be revived in a prequel film by a younger actor in Alden Ehrenreich. Having another of his characters killed off and then replaced with a younger version in a reboot – which was the rumour for the Indiana Jones franchise for a very long time – would be a bit too much if you ask me. At least this way, Indy can perhaps retire in peace at the end of the movie with his love Marion (no, we don’t care what happens to Mutt).

Spielberg wouldn’t reveal any hints as to exactly what will actually happen to Indy, but he does go on to say that he’s “super excited” about making this movie, which echoed Ford’s comments earlier in the year to Jimmy Kimmel about working with the legendary director again on this iconic franchise.

“The opportunity to work with Steven again on this character which has brought pleasure to so many… Not to mention me. It’s fun, it’s great fun to play this character. It’s great fun to work with Steven, I’m looking forward to it.”

The still untitled Indiana Jones 5 is currently scheduled for release on July 19, 2019.
