I have just stumbled across retro gaming gold. A fan remake of the classic Mega Drive series Streets of Rage has just been released for download and get this, its freeware my friends.

Developer Bomber Games began the remake way back in 2003 and after 8 years of building up the game from scratch it is finally ready. Hit the jump and see 1991 get a 2011 overhaul.

Not only have these guys recreated the original animations, collision detection and damage modelling, the team has also added in their own touch of awesomeness including cutscenes, 103 stages, 19 playable characters and a remixed music and sound effects.

Bomber Games has released Streets of Rage Remake as freeware, and the PC version will be joined in the coming months by Wiz and Linux versions. For more information and the download link, see the project blog.
