Studio Ghibli returns from a Poppy hill

I happen to be a big fan of Studio Ghibli films. They’re animated adventures that pull no punches, and the quality behind them is always fluid and stunning.

Their next film is ditching the fantasy for a touch more reality, and there’s an English subtitled trailer to show off that new sense of normality, in From up on Poppy Hill.

A group of Yokohama teens look to save their school’s clubhouse from the wrecking ball in preparations for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

From Up on Poppy Hill won various awards in Japan when it was released last year, and also happened to be the highest grossing film of 2011 there, raking over $56 million when released.

Written by Hayao “Spirited Away” Miyazaki and directed by his son Goro, it looks like another blockbuster film over here. Disney won’t be releasing it this time though, as GKids will handle that. There’s no solid release date yet, but it will most likely appear in time for the holiday season.
