It’s an early day on the Warner Bros. lot. Various film directors are busy editing and developing their superhero blockbuster that’ll finally put DC Comics on the cinematic map for all the right reasons. One such director is David Ayer, whose Suicide Squad movie looks like a dark and twisted take on the rogues of that universe. Gritty and powered by some of the hottest stars in the industry today, there’s no way that this movie can possibly be a critical flop.

And then the Warner Bros. execs entered his office. “Ello David,” Luigi Warner said in a nasally voice. “This is a lovely office you got here, David. Nice movie as well. It’d be a right shame if someone were to… edit it in post-production”. Which the Warner Bros. totally did according to my completely factual retelling of the production of Suicide Squad, a film which got absolutely savaged at the box office by critics.

Financially however? It was still a big hit, but another example of DC’s higher-ups meddling around where they really shouldn’t have to. One of the bigger complaints levied at the film however, was just how small of a role Jared Leto’s Joker played in the finished product after months of teases and hype. Letos’ clown prince of crime was hardly there, diminished to an almost inconsequential role that was at odds with the promises of the catchy-themed musical trailers.

Even Leto himself was upset, as he told IGN back in August that most of his footage was cut out completely. Which was a bummer for the method actor who spent many weeks terrorising the cast by going way too far into character. “Were there any that didn’t get cut?” Leto said in that interview over his deleted scenes.

I’m asking you, were there any that didn’t get cut? There were so many scenes that got cut from the movie, I couldn’t even start.

Fortunately, it sounds like Suicide Squad will feature a lot more of the Ace of Knaves when it hits home media, as Warner Bros. confirmed that the official extended cut will have more of those deleted scenes that the cast spoke about. But which cut will it be? After the original trailer that featured the film scored to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody earned rave love from fans, Warner Bros. and director David Ayers were apparently at odds with the direction of the film, the final result being a compromise between their visions.

“We have a chunk, there’s definitely over 10 minutes of material on [the DVD]. But this cut of the movie is my cut, there’s no sort of parallel universe version of the movie, the released movie is my cut,” Ayers still said to Collider a while ago. And after all those mean things said about the film by various critics, I’d doubt that Ayers would be interested in making another cut.

Anyway, Suicide Squad: The Extended Cut will be out for a download on November 15, with the Blu-Ray popping up on December 13.
