SUPERGIRL officially moving to CW for a cheaper season 2

Supergirl flight

Last week was a bloodbath in the US TV world as major network ABC gave the chop to a whole lot of shows including the likes of Marvel’s Agent Carter and Castle. And over on the other networks, there were some changes happening too, and they were just as as merciless. One such change actually confirmed weeks of speculation: CBS was officially getting rid of Supergirl. But not to fear though fans, as the show is not being cancelled but rather shipped off to sister network CW where it will be slightly retooled for its second season.

Supergirl has never been a gigantic ratings draw nor an all-out critical home run, but it has built a very solid fanbase, mostly through the effortlessly charming work of titular star Melissa Benoist. But all her likability as Kara Zor-El doesn’t hide the fact that the show is rather expensive to produce – reportedly, it comes with a $3 million per episode price tag, with a huge chunk being licencing. In an effort to curb those costs, the show’s second season will see its production moving house from Los Angeles in the USA, to Vancouver in Canada. You may recall that I did a big piece last year on the huge amounts of sci-fi/fantasy shows being produced out in Canada, with one of the major draws being its lower costs.

It wasn’t just money alone that was a strong motivating factor for the show to move to CW though. Well not 100%. As a larger network that skews to a more older demographic, CBS needs shows that have much higher ratings than what Supergirl was pulling in. CW is far more lenient with its ratings. Its core demographic also tends lean much heavier on the younger side, making it a much better fit for the show.

Of course with Supergirl moving to CW, it now also officially joins that network’s selection of DC Comics properties in Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. All three these shows are also produced by Supergirl producer Greg Berlanti, and they’re all also based in Vancouver, making this a true homecoming of sorts. Supergirl already had a hugely successful crossover episode with The Flash last month, and while technically Supergirl exists in a separate universe to the other three Arrow-verse shows (as they’re known), I wouldn’t be surprised if Berlanti found some new ways to have all his characters playing together.

It really is a fun show. Arrow and Flash are depressing as hell. Good but depressing as hell.
