SUPERGIRL TV series looking for its Superman; Calista Flockhart joins cast in major role

Just the other day I was having a discussion with a friend about CBS’ upcoming TV series adaptation of Supergirl, and how I couldn’t figure out how they could stay true to the character’s origins – which the pilot synopsis appears to hint at – and not actually feature Superman himself. I mean, that would be like making a Catwoman movie that completely ditches the Batman connection. And adds horrible basketball sequences. And killer make-up. And kung-fu Sharon Stone. And man, that movie was bad…

But I digress! The fact is that the origin story of Supergirl aka Kara Zor-El (played by Glee alum Melissa Benoist) is so entwined with that of her Kryptonian cousin, that it only make sense to feature him. And it looks like CBS will do just that after all.

ProjectCasting.com (via KryptonSite) has revealed a casting call for the show’s pilot episode for a male actor who is “5-foot-11 or taller,” is “square-jawed” and boasts “a ripped physique” to act  as a body double for “a DC Comic Superhero.” And if that description wasn’t enough to give the Super-game away, the casing call asks applicants to mark their entries with “Superman”.

The most interesting aspect of this whole call is “body double” bit, implying that we will more than likely only see this Superman either from a distance of having his face partially obscured somehow. This means that they’re more than likely just going to establish that Superman already exists in this universe, but not delve into his story in any way. This also means that we won’t have another version of the character running around to clash with the big screen version played by Henry Cavill, much like how Grant Gustin’s TV Flash will be clashing with Ezra Miller’s movie Flash.

Besides for the Big Blue Boyscout, there were also some other castings made. Deadline is reporting that Nashville and Law and Order: SVU actress Laura Bernanti has been tapped to play Alura Zor-El, Kara’s Kryptonian noblewoman birth mother. The fact that this show is set on Earth and not Krypton – which, you know, blew up – means that we’ll probably only see her in some flashback capacity, an assumption supported by the fact that Deadline says “her wisdom and guidance echoes across space and time, proving invaluable on Kara’s journey toward becoming Supergirl.”

A more substantial addition to the cast though is Ally McBeal herself, Calista Flockheart, who Variety reports has joined as a series regular to play longtime Superman comic book character Cat Grant. In the comics, her various incarnations has seen her as a – pardon the pun – catty fashion reporter, trashy gossip columnist and even Clark Kent’s love interest for a while. Here though, she will be “a self-made media magnate and founder of CatCo, where Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist) works as her assistant”. So essentially Supergirl’s version of Perry White, except in high heels.

These newcomers will of course be joining the previously cast and very un-ginger and un-scrawny Mehcad Brooks as photographer Jimmy Olsen. Supergirl is being exec produced by Greg Berlanti (Arrow, Flash) and Ali Adler (Glee, The New Normal), both of whom also co-scripted the show’s pilot episode.

  1. I’m still pissed about the two actors playing the Flash. Grant is AWESOME as the Flash!! But such is Hollywood.
This looks interesting though. The possibility of a cross over makes it even more so

Just a minor Correction. Kara’s mother is mainly mentioned to be a survivor with her father in the bottled city of Kandor.

Yeah, I know that, but there’s no allusion to Kandor in the details of the show, merely that she was on Krypton before it exploded.

I understand that but I am merely suggesting that we might see Kandor based on the fact that her mother might be in the show. 🙂

And Kandor is very much a part of Kara as alot of what made her was what happened to her parents in Kandor, so cant see it not being some how related to the shows version of Supergirl
