Properly animated 2D movies are most likely a thing of the past now. As charming as they are, they’re expensive, time-consuming and the little bastards that you helped spawn probably scoff at them.
And that’s a trend which began in the late 1990s and was pretty much set in stone by the early 2000s. But dammit, that is one genre of filmmaking that went out with a bang. Titan AE, Hercules and Tarzan were some of the last top-tier animated movies ever made. But at the top of that list, it’s hard to dispute just how influential Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant was.
Despite being a flop when it opened in 1999, time has been kind to that movie. And now, it’s getting a re-release with an enhanced signature edition that will hit select cinemas in the US, before it heads to Blu-Ray. Get ready to weep all over again at “Superman”.
If you can’t wait for the signature edition, then you can easily rent The Iron Giant right now. Like I said, it’s one of the best animated movies ever made, thanks to director Brad Bird nailing the right beats and a voice cast that included Vin diesel, Jennifer Aniston, Harry Connick Jr., James Gammon, Cloris Leachman, Christopher McDonald and John Mahoney.
