No one likes people that meddle in other affairs, especially parents who keep on trying to mess with your own life and try to influence your decisions. Not something that I can claim to have experience about… At all… Nope, not me… I have no torment at all about that…

Many parents have a fear of letting their children go as they get older, so I’m not sure if this new movie The Meddler, starring Susan Sarandon should actually be seen as a comedy or more of a horror?

In truth, it is not a horror at all and is actually aimed marked as a dramatic comedy of sorts, but perhaps it may have been more realistic if it were.

The film sees Sarandon play a recently widowed and eternally optimistic Marnie moving from New Jersey to California to be closer to her daughter Lori, played by Rose Byrne. Marnie repeatedly shows up unannounced to perk up her depressed daughter and soon starts interfering with the lives of her friends, sales attendance and even a potential love interest played by J.K. Simmons.

The Meddler is directed by Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World) from her own script and has already premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, with Sarandon’s performance in particular getting some praise. The film is produced by Joy Gorman Wettels of Anonymous Content. Sarandon serves as an executive producer with Anonymous’ Paul Green and Steve Golin.

The Meddler claims to be a mothers day gift to all mothers and that is why Sony Pictures Classics is releasing the film on April 22, a few days before mother’s day in the US. (Why they have to make their day separate from the rest of the world continues to confuse me). If you know of anyone who meddles too much in the affairs of others, perhaps you can take them to see this movie and hope they get the subtle hints that this is them.
