TERMINATOR 5 has found its director in Alan Taylor!

Talk about moving on up! Except, instead of a deeeeeeluxe apartment in the sky-y-y-y, it’s straight to the future to give us the battle between man and machine, as Variety reports that Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor will be the man to helm the fifth Terminator movie.

There’s been talk about a fifth entry into the franchise for ages now, with the film rights finally being snapped in their entirety by Annapurna Pictures and Skydance Productions not too long ago, but at this point we still know next to nothing about the story. We do know that this will be the first film in a new standalone trilogy – whether reboot or continuation is still unclear – and Arnold Schwarzenegger has confirmed that he will be appearing in it, in one form or another. Let’s hope that form is not that of Sgt Candy. There’s also been rumours flying around that franchise viagra Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson may be involved somehow, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Taylor being tapped to direct is only the second piece of concrete info we have about the production, the other being the release date of June 26, 2015 that has been set by Annapurna, Skydance and co-financier Paramount.

According to Variety, the studio had initially also looked at  Ang Lee, Rian “Looper” Johnson and Denis “Prisoners” Villeneuve, but in the end it was Taylor that got the nod.

What’s amazing about this is that if you go back just a couple of years, Alan Taylor’s name was about as well known as… well, mine. He had been toiling away on TV for years, doing solid directing work on everything from The Sopranos (for which he won an Emmy) to Deadwood and even Sex and the City and much more, but without much fanfare. Well, there was the other small handful of awards he won, but he wasn’t really a household name.

That all changed with Game of Thrones. Taylor directed 6 episodes in the first season of the acclaimed HBO fantasy adaptation, and executive produced just as many. His talent for the mythological brought him into Marvel’s field of view, and soon he was telling a thunder god what to do on Thor: The Dark World.

That shoot has apparently gone superbly, with nary a hitch (in fact, they even had time to add in a further dash of Loki, just for some extra kick), and it’s that stability and dependability that may just have tipped the odds in his favour here.

I really haven’t found a single thing to complain about in his TV work thus far, but come November we’ll finally be able to see what Taylor does with a truly big canvas in Thor: The Dark World. And if he nails the worlds of gods and elves, then maybe he can do the same for robots and freedom fighters. Certainly can’t do worse than McG’s Terminator: Salvation, right? RIGHT?!

Terminator Salvation was awesome! I mean, in the future we are all going to have a little device thingy that can override ANYTHING with a simple push of a button! Who cares if there are a bunch of murderbots on my ass the whole time? Oh I need not worry about them, coz they are all too happy to toss me around the room for a while instead of just ripping my heart out via my asshole…
