War! Huh! Yeah! What is it good for! Robbing banks! Huh? Yeah! Wait, what? American Heist is an upcoming action movie centered on brothers James and Frankie, portrayed by Hayden Christensen and Adrien Brody respectively, who’re drawn into one final job – participating in a bank heist in order to get both their lives back.

The official plot synopsis is as follows:

James (Hayden Christensen) owes his life to his older brother Frankie (Adrien Brody) after taking the rap for a crime they committed together. While Frankie served time, James worked to turn his life around, got a steady job and began courting his former girlfriend Emily (Jordana Brewster). Now, Frankie is released and back on the streets with no money and no place to go. He turns to his underworld connections (Akon) and convinces James to join him in hopes that one last job will be the solution to change both their lives.

Plot-wise it looks about as good as it sounds, with tropes around the failure of the American Dream (my tie is choking me!) and familial obligations smeared on thickly; and the less said about that accent Adrien Brody is sporting the better. However the action scenes from the bank robbery look good and well-shot, none of that shaky action-cam nonsense, and are the selling point of the movie – they reminded me a bit of Heat in a way (but without all the other stuff that made that particular heist movie so good).

American Heist is directed by Sarik Andreasyan (making his English language debut), with the script by Raul Inglis (Continuum). It stars Hayden Christensen (it’s a-me, Darth Vader!), Adrien Brody, Jordana Brewster, Tory Kittles and Akon; and releases in the US on 24 July.
