THE AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – Part 1 and 2 to be renamed; will be separate movies

We’ve already been treated to a fantastic start in the next phase of the Marvel cinematic universe with Captain America: Civil War, so the expectations are already high that it could just keep getting better before culminating in the next Avengers films, Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 & 2, that are so far planned for release in 2018 and 2019. Except, only those Avengers films won’t be happening any more…

In name at least, as the Russo brothers are looking to give the two films new titles instead. In speaking with Uproxx, the brothers dropped the news that they are looking to re-title the upcoming Avengers films in a conversation when they were asked how they intend to divide the movie – Joe had the following answer:

The movies are two very different movies.

When asked if the film titles are not misleading being titled part 1 and part 2, Anthony agreed that they were misleading with Joe continuing:

The intention is we will change it, we just haven’t come up with the titles yet. But, yes, we will change it. And, yes, that is a scoop: we will re-title them.

So, at least its only the names that will be changing and not the release dates at the moment…

The renaming does make a lot of sense, as people might feel they are only getting half a movie, as what happened with the last installment of The Hunger Games and no one really wants to watch a movie, if they feel like it won’t have any climax. How they decide to break the film up into two relatable chunks that still work separately remains to be seen. With the start we’ve had with Civil War though, I have no doubt that whatever they do, it will be a success. At this point they could probably title it The Fantastic Four and people will still come out in droves.

UPDATE: Devin Faraci at BMD has done some further digging and found that renaming Infinity War – Part 1 and makes even more sense from a narrative perspective, as these are really going to be two separate movies and not just one split into two.

When Marvel announced Avengers: Infinity War I and II people assumed that these films would tell one long story that would be cut in the middle, in the tradition of recent YA adaptations going from trilogies to quadrilogies. I had started hearing a couple of months ago that this wasn’t the case, that each film was very much its own movie, and that Infinity War I would have a definitive, complete ending. No cliffhangers, no ‘to be continued.’ It would be a whole film.

Infinity War is not just a placeholder name until they come up with something better. Infinity War I, I understand, is very Thanos heavy, setting up not only the character (which previous films have failed to do) but also getting him the Infinity Stones (which previous films have failed to do). Infinity War II is going to be the big action finale, with just about every Marvel Cinematic Universe hero showing up.
