In case you didn’t get the memoThe Dark Tower is filming in Cape Town right now! I tried finding a way of getting onto set (seriously, I did) but the production is seemingly run like a prison. But apparently there are a couple of Michael Scofields out there, because despite the secretive nature of the production, some candid on-set pics have now emerged (via Daily Mail).

The images give us our first look at star Idris Elba as the Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, the hero of Stephen King’s epic fantasy-western tome who has to assemble a party of fellow heroes to find the titular Dark Tower which stands at the centre of the multiverse, in order to save all creation. Right after he sends out the next tweet.

There’s been a huge furor about the black Elba being cast ast the traditionally white Roland. Personally, I’ve never had any doubt that as an actor, Elba could totally nail the badassness of Roland – even in these raw snaps that seems evident – the question was always going to be how the story would then adapt a key interaction with another central character which in the books was all about the fact that Roland was white. The images give us absolutely zero clues as to just how that is going to be pulled off, but at least Elba looks cool!

Now we just need to see the rest of the cast. I had a friend who was actually standing in the airport customs queue behind Matthew McConaughey and his family as they arrived in Cape Town yesterday, so hopefully it won’t be too long before we get a few shows of him as the villainous Randall Flagg aka Man In Black.

The Dark Tower is being directed by Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair, The Girl With the Dragon Tattor), and  was scripted by Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) and Jeff Pinkner (Fringe). It also stars Abbey Lee as the film’s female lead, Tirana, Tom Taylor as young Jake Chambers, Fran Kranz as Pimli, the right hand man of Flagg, and Vikings star Katheryn Winnick in a mystery role. The film is scheduled for release on February 17, 2017.

Easy, they just do what the rest of the internet is doing and make the interaction about the fact that he is Black O_o

I wouldn’t be too surprised (or upset) if the movie adaption has a lot of changes from the books while keeping the same basic theme. The books won’t disappear if you don’t like the movie.
