Buffy the Vampire Slayer has rightfully earned its place in pop culture fandom, but I dare anybody to go back to the first season of that show and not cringe. Hell, to this day, I have no idea what kind of voodoo Joss Whedon pulled off to get that show renewed, but its a good thing he did as it just went from strength to strength and turned Whedon into the Geek God he is today.

Why are we talking about an old vampire show that hasn’t been on the air for 11 years? Because Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is another Whedon produced show (though its more his brother Jed’s baby) that had a really wobbly start. I was nowhere near as harsh on the show as some, but even I could see the writers struggling to figure out just what kind of story they wanted to tell in the first half of their debut season. The fact that both Marvel and broadcasting network ABC are owned by Disney is probably what kept it afloat, even when the show was hemorrhaging ratings, and its a damn good thing it did because when the show finally started finding its footing, it really started becoming good.

And then, just a few episodes later, Captain America: The Winter Soldier happened, reshuffling AoS‘s entire universe, as the titular organization was revealed to be infested with Hydra agents. And suddenly a show that had just begun to get good, got frakking great. With jaw dropping double-crosses, exciting espionage stories, proper character development that made you care about this crew, a much more mature tone, and Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson becoming the total badass fans always knew he could be, Season 2 ended with most viewers chomping on the bit for more. And based on this first new teaser trailer, more of the same – which is definitely a good thing here – is exactly what we’re going to get.

Whether or not Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. can pull a Buffy and go on to become the dream Marvel show fans thought they were going to get when it was first announced is definitely still up for debate, but I’ll be damned if they’re not trying their best to do just that. With the show bringing in some new blood in the form of Lucy Lawless as Agent Isabelle HartleyKyle MacLachlan as Skye’s father, Adrianne Palicki as Bobbi “Mockingbird” Morse and Brian Patrick Wade as villain Carl “The Absorbing Man” Creel, the show is definitely also looking to expand its universe.

As a bonus, here’s the cast and crew speaking to Digital Spy at the recent Comic-Con about the first season’s biggest double cross (which I won’t spoil here for those people who still want to catch up), and also what we should expect in Season 2.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to TV screens in the US on September 26, expect local broadcasts to probably follow shortly thereafter.

  1. I would kill for a captain America Cameo this season though. He fits sooo damn well with this shows premise. I mean they are fighting Hydra for crying out loud!
