THE FLASH unveils first look at Teddy Sears as Jay Garrick, the original Flash

It was the geeky gasp held around the world, as a winged metal helmet came flying out of a portal during the epic season 1 finale of The Flash earlier in the year. In an episode already stacked with so many amazing scenes, it was a small detail, but for fans of the “The Flash” comic book it meant a lot as that helmet was of course the one worn by Jay Garrick, the first scarlet speedster in comic book history to go by the name of The Flash.

Many suspected that with the TV series’ recent dabbling in parallel timelines, it would open the path for Garrick and the rest of the Earth-2 characters (Earth-2 being the name given by DC Comics to their first line of comics during the 1940’s aka their Golden Age) to show up as well, and that was confirmed when it was announced at Comic-Con that Teddy Sears would in fact be playing Jay Garrick in the upcoming second season of the breakout hit show.

And now thanks to the show’s official Twitter account, we have our first look at him in costume alongside titular star Grant Gustin, in one seriously geektastic image!

If that isn’t a bit of giveaway, the image on the right is a clear homage to the monumental image on the left, the cover to 1961’s “The Flash #123”, the milestone issue that saw DC’s then modern characters (known as the Silver Age) interacting with the classic Golden Age characters for the very first time. In that story from comic book legend Gardner Fox, while experimenting with using his super speed to vibrate through solid objects, Barry Allen managed to rupture space and time and ended up in Earth-2 meeting Jay Garrick. This would be the first of many crossovers between parallel timelines in the DC Comics universe – it was used by the publisher as a way of reviving their old, nearly forgotten heroes without having them step on the toes of their more modern counterparts – and would eventually lead to the creation of the Multiverse.

In the comics Garrick would become a mentor of sorts to Barry, and it’s been confirmed by Grant Gustin that The Flash’s second season will see the same thing happening on TV, with Garrick even working with Barry to develop some new lightning-based power (via CinemaBlend):

“I mentioned he’ll have a new mentor in Season 2. In the second episode they’re already working together and in the second episode, Barry does something new with his powers that is really exciting to me. We’ve never done it before. It’s pretty different than anything else we’ve done…

…It involves lightning.”

This new season will also see the introduction of Shantel VanSanten (The Final Destination, One Tree Hill) as Patty Spivot, a young forensic officer who will also serve as a new love interest for Barry. Well, that’s after Barry gets out of the giant black hole vortex in the sky that he ran through at the end of the finale, of course!

The Flash‘s second season is set to debut on October 6, 2015.
