The frontier pushes back in this first trailer for STAR TREK BEYOND!

It appears that this was the week for stars. On Wednesday we all geeked our brains out for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but before that we actually kicked off the Star-ry sci-fi goodness a bit earlier than expected when Paramount  unveiled the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond four days ahead of schedule. And damn, it’s explosive! No, really. There are SO MANY explosions! It’s just wall-to-wall action!

You could even take it further that this trailer is fast and furious. And since the movie is directed by Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 3-6) I will in fact say it, because I sure as hell won’t let a good/bad pun pass me by. I may also make bad jokes about the new NOS upgrades on the USS Enterprise.

Packed with crazy action, cut a bit chaotically and boasting Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” as the soundtrack, Lin has certainly brought a different vibe to this than what JJ Abrams did with the first two films. And seeing as how Abrams’ more Star Wars-y “action first, intellectual sci-fi musings much later… maybe” vibe already didn’t go down too well with the classic Trekkies, I have a feeling that this won’t be winning over any of them either.

But if you’re a fan of over the top sci-fi action, kung fu fighting aliens and heroes who spew pithy one liners and jump canyons in motorcross bikes, and can forgive trailers who aren’t doing themselves any favours by being cut like a Michael Bay wet dream, then you may be in for a treat.

Oh, in case you’re wondering where you’ve seen that black and white painted alien femme fatale, that’s Sofia Boutella who made a razor sharp debut earlier this year as the blade-legged henchwoman Gizelle in the amazing Kingsman: The Secret Service.

There’s no glimpse yet though of the other big addition to the cast in Idris Elba, who at this point we only know will be some kind of villain who may or may not be a Klingon. He’s probably a Klingon.

Star Trek Beyond also stars Chris Pine, John Cho, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Bruce Greenwood, and Joe Taslim and is scheduled for release on July 22, 2016.
