I think we can all agree by now, that Mad Max: Fury Road is the very best post-apocalyptic road movie starring Bane as he wreaks havoc across the eco-system of Namibia. The movie is incredibly unapologetic about its madcap -crazy premise, taking that ball and just running all the way with it, over a hill and out of sight. It really is a crazy movie, that somehow just works.
But visualising the insanity? That must have taken a special kind of madness to do so. Before Fury Road was a full-fledged movie, it was merely an idea, built on sketches, paintings and art that stretch all the way back to the 1990s when director George Miller was looking to get the film off the ground.
The Art of Mad Max: Fury Road, happens to have all that magnificent art and the history of the film in a book-based format. But until I get my hands on it, I’ll settle for these glimpses of the fine concepts that shaped the film, in digital form from comic book artist Brendan McCarthy via io9. McCarthy began working on these concept pieces back in 1997, posting them on his website as well and describing the process as:

You’ll see a lot of my design philosophy and original creations for the movie; from The Buzzards (the buzz-saw wielding spiked vehicles), the Pole Cats (boarding marauders on poles), the whole ‘retro hotrod’ look of the Armada and some character designs.
