For a guy who started off his career as a singing eunuch (how else could he hit those high notes?), Justin Timberlake has made a reasonably successful transformation into an actor as well. And while his last starring movie, In Time, is best quickly forgotten, that hasn’t stopped him from trying his hand at this movie star business once again.
Unfortunately he may just lose that hand, and everything attached to it, to a scenery chewing Ben Affleck and his hungry alligators in new thriller, Runner Runner.
Princeton grad student Richie, believing he’s been swindled, travels to Costa Rica to confront online gambling tycoon Ivan Block. Richie is seduced by Block’s promise of immense wealth, until he learns the disturbing truth about his benefactor. When the FBI tries to coerce Richie to help bring down Block, Richie faces his biggest gamble ever: attempting to outmaneuver the two forces closing in on him.
While Affleck has been simply astounding behind the camera as of late, and his performances in front of it have all been solid, it’s been a while since we’ve seen truly showing off those thespian canines. The last truly scenery chewing performance I can recall was in Boiler Room, and he seems to be dipping back into that pool of crazy in this film, which is definitely not a bad thing.
Runner Runner will be placing its bets on September 27, 2013.
