The JUSTICE LEAGUE villain revealed? And it may not be who you think

This article contains some spoilers for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

When it comes to the big bads of the DC Comics universe, the biggest and baddest is undoubtedly Darkseid. Unlike his Marvel Comics ripoff Thanos (yes, Thanos is blatant copy), Darkseid is a literal god – the God of Evil, to be exact – which is why he would need nothing short of a gathering of the most powerful heroes to defeat him. A gathering much like we’re going to see in the upcoming Justice League – Part 1, which is why most people would assume that Darkseid would be the villain of choice for director Zack Snyder. Well that and the fact that his Omega symbol was blasted across an entire desert filled with his footsoldier Parademons in Batman v Superman.

But according to a new report from Devin Faraci over at BMD, Justice League – Part 1 will in fact have a different villain. And it will be one that we’ve already met. Sort of. According to Faraci’s sources, Darkseid will be in the shadows of Justice League until the very end but the main antagonist for the bulk of the film will in fact be Steppenwolf. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because that was the most likely candidate for the alien character glimpsed in the first deleted scene for Batman v Superman released by Warner Bros a scant few days after that film had opened. You can watch it below for a refresher.

In the comics, Steppenwolf is actually Darkseid’s uncle and the leader of his military forces. Of all the godlike beings created by writer/artist Jack Kirby as part of his Fourth World stories, as those tales are known, Steppenwolf is not the most powerful or most famous – he certainly isn’t on the level of Orion, Metron or Mister Miracle – but he is still a pretty big name and a powerfully worthy adversary. And even more so now in the most recent New 52 incarnation of his character where he actually invades Earth himself. And carries a big freaking energy axe. I feel like this last detail is very important for its coolness.

According to BMD’s report, “in Justice League Steppenwolf has a contentious history with Darkseid, which could be why he’s invading the Earth. But stopping him – and, I’m assuming, his Parademon hordes – requires more power than the members of the Justice League can muster, and so they must turn to a dead friend for help”. In case you somehow haven’t been keeping tabs, the (not so) dead friend is Superman.

I had always suspected that Justice League – Part 1 would have some other villain instead of Darkseid, and this makes an awful lot of sense. Steppenwolf is certainly powerful enough to give the newly formed League a run for their money, and is a good gateway to Darkseid and the rest of Apokolips. This way it also gives the fledgling cinematic universe time to grow between Justice League – Part 1 in November 2017 and Part 2 in June 2019 – it would also probably not be a good idea to blow the entire villain wad on the first team-up movie in the DC Comics movie-verse – with The Flash, Aquaman and Shazam all scheduled to to be released in that gap.

  1. “not be a good idea to blow the entire villain wad on the first team-up movie” – that is something that is concerning me quite a bit after BvS. It did feel like it should have been at least 2 movies, or at least set up the universe further. If they blow their load too early, they will never catch up/keep up. Hope they get the balance better in their next effort. *Yes, I liked BvS. Could/Should have been much better*
