Ah Lego. I’ve still got a massive jar of the stuff, which I periodically use as a torture tool by laying out several blocks on a floor and forcing people to run barefoot through that pointy-edged minefield of twos and fours. The brand has expanded massively over the years though, incorporating all manner of licenses with which to construct new…stuff.
After a few TV series and direct to DVD films, Lego is now going for the big screen. And it’s going to star…well, everybody that it possibly can.
The original 3D computer animated story follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.
It may be a gigantic commercial for the Danish blocks, but when will you ever get to see a Morgan Freeman voicing a wizard that teams up with Batman again? The story looks as stereotypically goofy as possible, but dammit, that stop motion animation just charmed my socks off. And did anyone see 21 Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller managing to follow up that successful film with this particular genre? I for one, didn’t.
The Lego Movie will be assembling into cinemas in 2014, and also stars the voices of Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman and Alison Brie, with Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman.
