Vampires suck. No, I’m not talking about the obvious or a terrible parody film on the Twilight series (Although I do blame that franchise for a sudden decline in awesome Nosferatu films).

With Vampires now seen as romantic soulless denizens of the night, all the mystery, intrigue and terror of the myth has been wiped away quicker than my salary when I walked into a Batman shop.

But sometimes, just sometimes, a random Hollywood executive snorts enough cocaine to green-light an idea that is so preposterous, so outrageous, its too brilliant to pass up. Which brings us to the first ever film where a Republican leader of the good ‘ol US of A moonlights as a Vampire Exterminator at night.

It’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Starring Benjamin Walker as the 16th American President, the film sees the iconic leader emancipating his fist and several weapons from Vampires, as he secretly protects his young nation and the slaves from the bloodthirsty fiends, shaping his abolishment views along the way.

Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, who had previously worked on Wanted and produced by Jim Lemley, the film based on the Grahame Smith book of the same name is scheduled for release in June this year.

In the meantime, enjoy some behind the scenes footage of Abe Lincoln, courtesy of MTV.

What decline? Since Twilight we’ve had Let The Right One In/Let Me In – among the best vampire movies ever made. And the new Fright Night is very decent. Twilight is retarded, but the vampire genre is littered with so much crap already…

Agreed that Let The Right One In and Fright Night were superb.
