If you ask me, there’s never really been a proper Predator sequel. The John McTiernan directed 1987 action movie classic did get a follow-up in the urban set Predator 2, but let’s face it: Danny Glover fumbling around LA is just no replacement for Arnold Schwarzenegger mowing down a rain forest. 2010’s Predators offered a bit more hope and certainly has its fans (James is a big champion of it around these parts) but it never quite clicked with me as well as that original did. And of course the less we talk about the AvP movies the better.

But that long awaited sequel may finally be here soon in the form of director/writer Shane Black (Iron Man 3) and co-writer Fred Dekker’s “inventive” sequel. A sequel that now has a completed script. Dekker took to Facebook yesterday where he posted a cute little a drawing of an alien predator from a 7-year old named Angus Hendon, revealing that it’s “A character from the new screenplay we just turned in“.

Predator_12313844_748157358648918_843389675935126402_nAt the moment we know very little about this new film other than it’s somehow a direct sequel to the original film which saw Arnie lead a team of Special Forces macho men on a mission to rescue hostages in a Central American jungle, only to find themselves being hunted by a stealthy alien creature who has come to Earth looking for hunting trophies to add to its collection.

Producer John Davis, who also produced the original, heaped praise on Black and Dekker’s franchise revitalizing story idea when he spoke to Collider earlier in the year:

“…I’ve read a lot of his script and I think it’s genius. I think it’s genius and I think it’s entertaining, and what it did is recreate a famous franchise in a different, interesting way; looking at it from a different light. He’s just an amazing writer-director. He’s got a way of looking at this that makes you excited again. I love this franchise. It was the first movie I ever did. I remember in being in the jungle with Arnold [Schwarzenegger] as a 28-year-old and going, ‘This is a fun business!’…Shane’s amazing. He’s an amazing storyteller.”

“Shane’s got a writing partner, Fred Dekker. They’ve been doing it together and Fred’s great. The two of them together, they’ve been in the business for a long time, but the writing is so fresh, the perspective is so fresh. I’m telling you you’re going to get something you don’t expect and you’re going to say, ‘This is the most entertaining way to reinvent a franchise.’ I mean he’s the guy who wrote Iron Man 3.”

As Davis mentions, Black is coming off the success of Marvel’s Iron Man 3 but he is of course no stranger to the Predator franchise. After gaining acclaim for penning the script for Lethal Weapon, McTiernan brought him in to polish up the script for Predator, and not only did he do the rewrites but he also landed the role of the Special Forces team’s radioman Rick Hawkins. Black would go on to pen some of the 80’s/90’s best action movies in the form of The Last Boy Scout, The Last Action HeroThe Long Kiss Goodnight and more. He also co-wrote the cult classic monster team-up flick The Monster Squad with Dekker.

Predator (2)

Black has just recently wrapped The Nice Guys, a mystery thriller set in the 1970s staring Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger and which is slated for May 2016. He still also has a long gestating Doc Savage adaptation in the pipeline, as well as being tapped to direct an adaptation of The Destroyera series of 1970’s action novels following policeman Remo Williams, which had already been adapted to the screen once before in 1985’s Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins.

So yeah, his dance card is pretty full at the moment, so there’s no telling when this new Predator movie will actually get released.

  1. Moar Predator! I actually liked the AvP movies. Sure they could have been better, but still good to watch for me.

The 2nd one was a decent enough time-waster, but the PG13 first movie sucked balls
