The second STAR WARS ANTHOLOGY film will reportedly be a Boba Fett origin story

Boba Fett

Looks like Josh Trank just lost out on a big one. We still don’t know who the new director on the planned second Star Wars Anthology spinoff movie will be after Trank was reportedly fired by Disney/Lucasfilm, but now we may know what the movie is about.

Before Lucasfilm made their movie plans known, there were lots of rumours swirling around about what these standalone movies released between the main episodes would actually focus on. One of the persistent rumours was that we would see the origin story of fan-favourite bounty hunter Boba Fett, and according to The Wrap, it’s not a rumour any more. Their sources confirm that following on from Gareth Edwards’ first Anthology film, Star Wars: Rogue One – which will a war film surrounding the heist of the original Death Star’s plans by Rebel spies – this second film “will explore the rich world of bounty hunters in the “Star Wars” galaxy” with the most famous bounty hunter of them all at the centre of it.

Yes, these are merely unconfirmed sources and Disney has declined to offer any official comment – which means I will throw up the obligatory RUMOUR warning – but based on everything we’ve been hearing, as well as The Wrap’s track record, I think it’s only a matter of time before this is made official.

You may recall that early in last year Cartoon Network (who has had lots of ties with Lucasfilm) veteran Jon Schnepp stated without a shred of uncertainty that one of the spinoff films will be about Boba Fett, and will be written by Lawrence Kasdan (who actually penned the character’s first big-screen appearance in Empire Strikes Back). But according to Lucasfilm’s official plans, Kasdan is only writing the third of the four planned Anthology films. So either Schnepp was actually way off, despite his insistence, or Kasdan is pulling a Joss Whedon and has his fingers in all the Star Wars pies. Seeing as how he’s a part of the self-proclaimed “Star Wars brain trust”, this is certainly not far-fetched.

As for just what a Boba Fett origin story would entail though, we’ve already seen Fett’s birth and younger years – as the clone “son” of Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett – in the Prequel Trilogy as well as Cartoon Network’s Clone Wars animated series, so there’s no need to rehash that. And we also know that when he dies (more on that below) in the Original Trilogy, so the only unmined area of his life are those teenage/young adult years, that see him becoming the badass bounty hunter we eventually meet years later. I would love to say that could actually be a pretty cool story, but the last time the Star Wars universe decided to show us the teenage/young adult years of a helmeted badass, we got this:

Granted, there’s no George Lucas involved this time around, and I have a lot more faith in the aforementioned brain trust, but I’m still going to err on the side of caution on this one.

Now back to the whole Boba Fett being dead thing: Back when we last heard these rumours, it had not yet been confirmed that the Star Wars Expanded Universe stories were being tossed out as non-canon. Now we know for a fact that the scene in “Star Wars: Dark Empire” showing Fett surviving the Sarlacc pit he was tossed into in Return of the Jedi did not officially happen, which leaves Fett very much dead. That would imply a narrative dead-end (pardon the pun), that these filmmakers may want to avoid. The new “Expanded Universe” may allow Fett a new way out of his grave though, in case Lucasfilm wanted to bring him back later.

BobaFett-Empire

Whatever happens, whether or not this film is actually about Fett, Lucasfilm still need to find a director. I say give it to Brad Bird (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), who only lost out to JJ Abrams for the director’s chair on The Force Awakens because he was too busy with Tomorrowland already. According to his IMDB page, Bird’s slate is looking pretty clear between now and the scheduled release date 0f 2018.

And if you they can’t get Bird, my very early nomination of Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, Captain America: The First Avenger, Jumanji) still stands. As a young production designer working alongside the legendary Ralph McQuarrie, it was actually Johnston that designed Fett’s distinct look. Bringing him back into the Star Wars fold would align perfectly with Lucasfilm’s apparent intention to recapture those glory days of the franchise.

I could never understand the amount of fanboyism Fett got. Sure his ship was cool and he had some nice gadgets etc but for me he was just a means to an end. I would rather have a movie about Snips than Bobba. Then again I am apparently part of a minority in the Star Wars community.

AHSOKA! Er.. I mean… sure, that would be okay. I guess.

I can see the Bubba Fett movie being similar to the Stallone version of Judge Dredd. Running around the whole movie without wearing the helmet that makes him so cool.

It was the EU that did it. The movies introduced just a cool looking character, but the EU really made him the badass that people loved.

Still a rather moot point for me as the EU also brought on far more interesting characters like Kyle Katarn,Mara Jade and Corran Horn.
