The first season of HBO’s award winning crime anthology drama True Detective was simply astounding (so much so that we rated it the best of last year). Creator/writer Nic Pizzolatto assembled a perfect storm of talent when he had Cary Fukunaga direct the sweaty Southern hell out of every episode, as Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson chewed all the scenery in arguably career best performances. And that’s not even mentioning that incredible intro song!

With the bar set that high, a follow-up season featuring an all new cast involved in a totally different story was always going to be a pretty tall order. Has Pizzolatto and co actually pulled it off? Well, it’s too early to tell, but at least we now have our first glimpse of it. And it looks promising!

HBO unveiled the first dialogue-free teaser trailer for the show, and while it completely skimps on any plot or character details, we do get to see several of those characters interacting and it looks potentially electric. This season of the anthology sees Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch (with backup from Colin Farrel’s moustache) as three law enforcement officers from different branches of the government all trying to piece together some big crime that has to do with Vince Vaughn’s career criminal. And based on this trailer, things are not going to be pleasant for any of them.

A bizarre murder brings together three law-enforcement officers and a career criminal, each of whom must navigate a web of conspiracy and betrayal in the scorched landscapes of California. Colin Farrell is Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective in the all-industrial City of Vinci, LA County. Vince Vaughn plays Frank Semyon, a criminal and entrepreneur in danger of losing his life’s work, while his wife and closest ally (Kelly Reilly), struggles with his choices and her own. Rachel McAdams is Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective often at odds with the system she serves, while Taylor Kitsch plays Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle cop for the California Highway Patrol who discovers a crime scene which triggers an investigation involving three law enforcement groups, multiple criminal collusions, and billions of dollars.

Man, I love that song already (which coincidentally is by Lera Lynn and was composed specifically for this). Sure it’s nowhere close to the instant classic status of The Handsome Family’s “Far From Any Road” but it certainly helps to set the mood for this new season of the show. A season that will debut on June 21, 2015, as HBO announced along with the trailer. They’ve also unveiled these character pics for the four members of the central cast.

True Detective season 2 – series 2? chapter 2? – also stars Kelly Reilly, Afemo Omilami, Lolita Davidovich, Abigail Spencer, Levin Rambin, James Frain and Michael Wyatt. Whereas Cary Fukunaga directed all 8 episodes of the first season, a few different directors will tackle a couple of episodes at a time this time around. The Fast & Furious franchise’s Justin Lin has already been revealed to helming the first two episodes, while Danish documentarian Janus Mets has also been confirmed. Veteran directing legend William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection) is believed to possibly also be directing a few of the later episodes.

I think it might suit him a bit. It’s uh… prominent.
