The US remake of THE IT CROWD is being turned off and on again

If there’s any one TV show that anyone in the IT industry should watch, it’s The IT Crowd. And not the Big bang Theory, so feel free to club those people with a cricket bat if they mix the two up. Set in the inner circles of hell known as corporate IT, the show was a three season smash hit, that naturally attracted the attention of the US, with a pilot being filmed for their adaptation. And it was terrible. So, so bloody terrible despite the talent involved. Now, it looks like the show is getting another shot at redemption.

According to Deadline, Community’s Neil Goldman and Garrett Donovan are currently in charge of the latest remake, with NBC commiting to pilot episode at the very least. The right hand men of Community head writer Dan Harmon for three seasons, the IT Crowd deal will also reunite them with Bill “Scrubs” Lawrence.

And colour me optimistic, but I have a good feeling about this. There’s a fine line that has to be walked on when it comes to adaptations. On the one hand, you don’t want to deviate too far from the successful original show when you put your stamp on it. On the other hand, stay too close to the original, and you get a carbon-copy remake that is pretty much pointless. Hell, they even got some guy who looks and sounds just like Richard Ayoade’s Moss for the US pilot back in 2007:

The US version will most likely stay close the usual stereotype of two geeky IT drones being forced to share a sub-basement floor with their clueless female colleague. Hopefully, with a decent analogue of Richmond included, who is himself a rather creepy analogue of Nick.
