The world still needs a Superman in this latest trailer for Justice League

I like Henry Cavill as Superman. Even though he’s only had two films to his credits as the big blue boy scout, there’s a surprising amount of charm and warmth to his portrayal of Superman. A humanity that shines through the spandex, when a sparse selection of scenes allow for it. That’s the Superman that I grew up and identify with, a beacon for hope and being a better person today than you were yesterday.

It’s pretty much the inverse of the Superman that we got in Batman V Superman, as that film harped on Kal-El’s emotional disconnect with the planet instead, creating a mopey and sullen man of steel. I’m not saying that it’s a bad angle to explore, but when you forget that Superman represents the best inside of all of us, it quickly gets tired.

Fortunately, it looks like that Superman is back. Sort of. See for yourself in the latest trailer for Justice League.

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

There’s plenty of terrific stuff in the trailer above, most of which seems dedicated to what I’d imagine is the third act of the film: There’s a conveniently abandoned Eastern-European City, the Parademons of Apocalypse have turned a nuclear reactor into a nesting ground and the Justice League is united for a final stand against Steppenwolf and his hordes. Still no Superman in action, which is the smartest marketing move by Warner Bros. so far I reckon.

Also, Cyborg and Aquaman look like they have the best bromance ever. MY MAN! Justice League drops next month.

  1. Look, we all know Supes is in the movie as the actor was involved, but the way he was used in the trailer hides the “big reveal” and has him in a dream sequence – very nicely done IMO!
