There are lots of guns, young and old, in this first official synopsis and set pics for THE EXPENDABLES 3

After last week’s final addition of Glen Powell to the cast for The Expendables 3, star/producer Sylvester Stallone and director Patrick Hughes were finally set to get this show on the road. And yesterday, thanks to a handy press release from Lionsgate including the final cast list as well as the first official synopsis for the explodathon threequel, we learned that the film has officially begun shooting in Bulgaria.

This was also confirmed by the first set pics being dropped on the net. And if you expected these set pics to contain images of guns, well then you won’t be disappointed. What may be surprising though, is that the film’s biggest guns seem to be those attached to Mel Gibson’s shoulders!

Holy drunken racial slurs, Batman! Has the 57-year old Gibson been angrily bench pressing synagogues over the last couple of months? Doing dumbbell curls with an upset Russian singer/model in each hand perhaps? GETTING DRUNK ON THE JUICE?!

Now it’s not as if he’s never got all muscled-up before, as he was quite jacked for Braveheart, but that was 18 years and a very messy fall from grace ago! And even so, I don’t recall those guns ever getting that big back then.

Maybe his newfound ripped-ness has to do with the fact that Sylvester Stallone has apparently gone and hired a whole bunch uppity young killers to take out Gibson’s character, Conrad Stonebanks, as is revealed in the film’s new synopsis.

Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables — but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

Stallone went on to explain how he came up with this concept for the film:

The Expendables… they’re broken up, they’re shot, they’ve had it, they’re done. We have to hire [a] new us, we have to find new Expendables, but there are none! They don’t make people like us anymore; they are all like robots. So I can go out and hire five young guys, but they’re the new army, they got drones and technology, but they’re not like us. Remember in Tropic Thunder? Just like those guys!

Er… I don’t think Stallone watched the same Tropic Thunder that I watched, because Ben Stiller and his friends were certainly not “younger, faster and more tech-savvy”. Either way, while it does take away some of the appeal of watching these old fogies battling it out toe to arthritic toe, bringing in some new blood will help to keep the franchise fresh.

The press release also revealed that Dan Bradley, the second-unit director on the Bourne flicks, will be doing the second-unit shooting for Red Hill director Patrick Hughes on this film. With The Expendables 2 easily being one of the most fun experiences I’ve had in a cinema in the last couple of years, Hughes and co are going to have their work cut out for them.

Here are all the new set pics, which show some huge guns being setup for a shot, as well as the remainder of the press release, which reveals the film’s finalized cast and crew.

The Expendables 3 will feature Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to their roles in the first two films with Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford joining the all-star cast along with Kellan Lutz, MMA star Ronda Rousey, welterweight boxing champion Victor Ortiz and Glen Powell.

Patrick Hughes will direct the film, with veteran Dan Bradley directing the second unit. The Expendables 3 is written by Creighton Rothenberger & Katrin Benedikt, who previously teamed on Olympus Has Fallen, and Sylvester Stallone. Avi Lerner, Kevin King-Templeton, Danny Lerner and Les Weldon are producing The Expendables 3. Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson and John Thompson are executive producing. Lionsgate will release The Expendables 3 in North America and the UK on August 15, 2014.

  1. I watched Battle of the Damned the other night with Dolph Lundgren. I don’t know if he was meant to be injured or something, but half the time he was running I kept hoping someone would bring the old man a wheelchair because he did not look comfortable.

I am so looking forward to this movie. I loved the second, real fun stuff. These days everyone is like, oh, depth, meaning, what happened to the days of basing the crap out of the bad guy just because, well, BECAUSE!

When he said “Remember in Tropic Thunder? Just like those guys!”, I think he meant that they are totally useless in the battlefield 😛
