While I know there are many ardent fans of the first Hobbit pic, I was left feeling a bit meh. It was great to be back in Tolkien’s world, brought to life so capably by director Peter Jackson and his cast/crew, and there were many outstanding moments, but with all the padding needed to stretch a 310 page children’s book into an almost 9 hour long fantasy trilogy, it just ended being more middle of the road than Middle-Earth.

That being said, we are reaching my favourite part of the story now with the second film, subtitled The Desolation of Smaug, and I’m feeling more excited for it than Gollum at a sushi bar. And judging from this second full elftastic trailer my exuberance is warranted.

The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece “The Hobbit,” by J.R.R. Tolkien, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

Oooooh. Now that’s what you call a dragon-voice. Okay yes, I was hoping to actually see and not just hear more of Smaug, but Benedict Cumberbatch’s gravelly, bass rumbly voice alone will do quite nicely for now, thank you very much.

Oh and if you’re a fan of Orlando Bloom’s wispy Legolas though (and not a literary purist), then you must be grinning from ear to pointy fake elf ear right now, right Darryn?

Along with the new trailer, a horde of banners have also been released, some predictably focusing on Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and his Dwarven companions, as well old faces, Gandalf and Legolas, while the other two respectively showcases Lee Pace as Legolas’ Elf King pops, Thranduil, and Luke Evans as fan favourite character Bard the Bowman, representing for the humans.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be sneaking into your cinema to steal your cup in 3D on December 13, 2013.

  1. I find it interesting how LOTR fans are accusing The Hobbit of padding and dragging its feet. It’s by far the most paced out of all of those movies! I couldn’t even finish the original trilogy, but I’ve seen The Hobbit three times already. Can’t wait for the second film.

No, you misunderstand me. It wasn’t slow paced at all. It was just a whole lot of not much happening all the time. Essentially, lots of frantic, very good looking running around, with not much to show for it.

Yes, you have a point. When they were still in the house when the second song got going, I started to panic. But it ended up pacing well from there on.

I have seen An Unexpected Journey 7 times. I loved it each time.

“Dragonfire and ruin! That is what you will bring upon us. He cannot see beyond his own DESIRE!” Heck. yeah. Bring on December, baby!
