If there’s one story that has been adapted more times than you can count, it has to be the Chinese tale of Journey To The West. Video games, TV series and various movies have all told the story of a great warrior who traveled west in order to find enlightenment. So what’s one adaptation then?

into-the-bandlands

Other than the brief trailer below, not much is known about the show beyond the synopsis from AMC:

Into the Badlands is a genre-bending martial arts series very loosely based on the classic Chinese tale Journey to the West. In a land controlled by feudal barons, Into the Badlands tells the story of a great warrior and a young boy who embark on a journey across a dangerous land to find enlightenment. “We’re incredibly excited to blaze the trail, bringing a martial arts drama to television,” says writer/co-showrunner Miles Millar.

What into the badlands does have however, is a great pedigree in its action star. Daniel “The Heavenly Kings” Wu leads the cast, which also includes Emily “28 Weeks Later Beecham, Sarah “The Tudors” Bolger and Oliver “My Hero” Stark. Created by writers/showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar, the show also has Stephen Fung and Daniel Wu from Tai Chi Zero executive producing.

It’ll be out later this year on the AMC network. Just in time to replace my aging Martial Law DVDs, as its been way too long since an episodic kung-fu series was on the air.
