Ever since I spent nearly a decade living in England I have had a soft spot for crime thrillers, mainly because 50% of what was on the telly over there were whodunnits. So this first trailer for Child 44, from British writer Tom Rob Smith, has me intrigued, especially as it’s produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House). This time though you won’t be listening to English accents on BBC 1, not by any means. No, this time it’s going to be English folkwith Russian accents… Not sure how I feel about that. Bryan Singer’s Valkyrie was spoken in ‘normal’ English which I thought allowed for greater immersion so I am hoping that actors like Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises), Noomi Rapace (Prometheus) and Gary Oldman (Fifth Element) come across as natural in this Stalin-era Soviet Thriller. Nothing worse than a bad Russian accent!
Dialects aside though, the movie looks to be an edge of your seat thriller, boasting solid performances from the stellar cast and the Stalinist Russia location should make for some great atmosphere. Check out the trailer below.
A politically-charged serial killer thriller set in 1953 Soviet Russia, “Child 44” chronicles the crisis of conscience for secret police agent Leo Demidov (Tom Hardy), who loses status, power and home when he refuses to denounce his own wife, Raisa (Noomi Rapace), as a traitor. Exiled from Moscow to a grim provincial outpost, Leo and Raisa join forces with General Mikhail Nesterov (Gary Oldman) to track down a serial killer who preys on young boys. Their quest for justice threatens a system-wide cover-up enforced by Leo’s psychopathic rival Vasil (Joel Kinnaman), who insists “There is no crime in Paradise.”
Child 44 also Vincent Cassell and Joel Kinnaman and is set to land on April 17, 2015.
