Hey, guys! Remember when Ben Affleck was a laughing stock who just kept starring in sucky movies? Well, he damn sure showed us! Ever since Ben Affleck 2.0 showed up on the scene with his feature film directing effort Gone Baby Gone in 2007, the actor/director has been on absolute tear. Yes, Runner Runner was leaning towards the crappy side, and we can write (and have written!) at length about the divisive Batman v Superman, but even in those you can’t fault Affleck’s performances.

When he’s at his absolute best though, seems to be when he’s directing himself. The last time he did this was in the fantastic Argo, which saw him walking away with three Oscars and two Golden Globes. We’ve been waiting three years for Affleck to stop being batty long enough to give us his filmmaking follow-up to that, the 1920’s gangster drama Live By Night. Well, now its finally here! Or at least the first trailer is, and judging from it, it appears that Ben Affleck 2.0’s stellar run is just going to continue!

“Live by Night” is set in the roaring `20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.

Live By Night also stars Sienna Miller, Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Messina, Zoe Saldana, and Chris Cooper. It is scheduled for release on January 13, 2017.
