(l to r) Vincent D'Onofrio, Martin Sensmeier, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Ethan Hawke, Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Byung-hun Lee star in Columbia Pictures' THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN.

I’m not a huge fan of Westerns. I find the genre quite mundane and often quite pretentious. Maybe it’s the time period that doesn’t appeal to me or perhaps the predictability of the characters. I haven’t really figured it out yet, as there are some which I have greatly enjoyed, but many, many more that I would rather just skip on by because it doesn’t wow me. So it’s probably a good thing that director Antoine Fuqua’s remake of The Magnificent Seven appears to be about as un-western as you can get – without descending into the ridiculous Wild Wild West category.

What I’ve liked most about this film so far from what I’ve seen, outside of the great talents of Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, is just the amount of fun that the film has. The characters looks like they are genuinely enjoying themselves, particularly Pratt, who always seems to be having fun in his movies. Yes, the characters are still clichéd and stereotyped and the film could still be pretentious, but it just looks like a duel too good to miss out on.

And we’ve been graced with two new trailers of the film, one for US audiences and another for International audiences, because for some reason, studios like to stereotype us too, I guess. The US one seems to be focused more around the humour in the film whereas the international one aims to provide a little more reason behind the mayhem of The Magnificent Seven.

I’ll be honest, I am really looking forward to this one. Fugua is a stylish director, especially when it comes to action sequences and it seems we will have that on full display here. Not to mention a strong cast to back it all up.

The full synopsis for the film is below:

With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.

The Magnificent Seven is planned for release on September 23, 2016.
