The Lobster

The next time somebody tells you that the movie industry has no more original ideas and it’s all reboots and sequels, kindly direct them here, to this first trailer for The Lobster. Starring Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz, this latest film from Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth) is set in a wacky dystopian future in which single people are bussed off to an odd hotel where they are given 45 days to find a partner. If they fail to find a lover within the allotted time, they are forcibly transformed into an animal of their choosing. Yes, you read all of that correctly.

The film debuted at Cannes earlier in the year where it was a huge success, with many calling it incredibly charming and quirky, and an unexpectedly moving experience based on how weird the entire concept is. And boy, is it weird!

It may come off a little bit too arty and pretentious for your usual Michael Bay-loving general public, but I have to admit I am greatly intrigued to see this. Even if it’s just to see if Colin Farrell can still find love as a crustacean! Check out the trailer below.

The Lobster also stars Ben Whishaw, John C. Reilly, Olivia Colman and Lea Seydoux. It opens in the UK on October 16, but there’s no word yet on further international release dates.
