This first trailer and images for THE MARTIAN is going to have to science the crap out of survival!

Space! The final frontier! Unless you’re director Ridley Scott that is. I’ll be the first person to admit that the end result of his last cosmic flick, Prometheus, was pretty much a cluster-fudge of incredibly stupid moments in sci-fi. That being said however, Scott still directed a film that looked beautifully stupid. Technically, it was a fantastic piece of cinema.

So what happens when Scott makes a return visit to space, unencumbered by studio politics? You get this fine looking piece of astro-exploration, starring Matt Damon and co:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.

That looks…surprisingly damn good! In addition to the trailer above, Scott is hitting the viral scene that introduces the crew of the Ares mission to Mars in short videos. Here’s the first one:

The Martian is out in November and also stars Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.
