Mortdecai

Johnny Depp is a conundrum. Despite being an obviously talented actor, the last few years have seen him develop a tendency to just disappear into a sea of blandness on-screen unless he’s playing some ludicrous caricature of a character with a penchant for exorbitant amounts of makeup and funny headgear. But when he plays these crazy characters, he takes them so far over the top, that essentially the character’s quirks end up overshadowing the actor beneath all the face paint.

So what is Depp to do? Apparently his answer is to grow a ridiculous moustache by the looks of this first trailer for Mortedecai, a Wes Anderson-ish international crime caper that sees Depp as the foppish title character, Charlie Mortdecai, bungling his way through the world on the trail of a stolen Nazi painting (alas, not the one of the fallen Madonna with the big boobies).

Depp appears to be slightly – SLIGHTLY – more restrained than some of his latest offerings, which unfortunately elicits an instant sigh from me. But with a great cast around him and a reasonably solid filmmaker like David Koepp (Mission: Impossible, Jurassic ParkSpider-Man) behind the camera and on co-scripting duties, this has the potential to be mildly entertaining. Even if it is just because of Olivia Munn’s cleavage.

Juggling some angry Russians, the British MI5, his impossibly leggy wife, and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part-time rogue Charlie Mortdecai (Depp) must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.

Mortdecai also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Goldblum and Paul Bettany. It is scheduled to hit theaters on February 6, 2015.

What is up with him? Amazing how Brad Pitt has gone on to become such a fantastic actor in good movies and Depp has turned into a Cage-alike actor…

That’s not fair. Depp was great in Lone Ranger, but the movie failed him. And Transcendence is a lot better than what many have made it out to be. I’m not averse to the idea that a lot of Depp’s problem is that it’s fashionable to diss him.

There are many really cool sci-fi ideas in Transcendence that I really didn’t expect. It falters in its third act, but it definitely isn’t a bad movie by a long shot.

Interesting how it’s 19% by critics on RT, but has a very respectable 6.4 on IMDB.

It’s the typical critic pile-on again, I fear.

Has anyone else noticed how many Depp movies Paul Bettany appears in? They must be good friends…

They are. I remember a recent interview with Bettany about his upcoming role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and he was talking about how he takes his kids holidaying on Depp’s island. Yes, Depp owns his own island.

And here I was feeling sorry for Bettany because he never seems to land a successful movie.

I like the idea of this movie. To me it seems like the kind of character that fits Debb. He might not act in AA films lately, but he’s always had a unique pallet for films it would seem.
