Some of the best things in life come from pairings. Laurel and Hardy. Salt and vinegar chips. Benson and Hedges cigarettes. KOF! I think Sam Mendes and John Logan need to be added to that list, after the work that they put in which resulted in the latest James Bond film, Skyfall.

The two are back again for another show, which is slightly less Bond and far more horror, in Penny Dreadful.

Set in ye olde Victorian England where showing sexy ankles was still a crime, Penny Dreadful stars Josh Hartnett and Eva Green, and sees Victorian era classic monsters such as Dorian Grey, Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster team up and find a way to not get sued by the rights holders of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I mean mystery and crime and stuff. Mendes and Logan helped sheperd the show on TV, with the first two episodes being directed by Juan Antonio Bayona.

Originality claims aside, the production values do look pretty slick and polished and its clear that plenty of coin was dropped onto it. Speaking at a TCA press tour, creator and showrunner Logan explained some of his inspirations behind the series. ”I started thinking about themes and why almost 200 years after Frankenstein was written, we’re still reading Frankenstein,” he said. “I think it’s because the monsters break my heart. Growing up as a gay man before it was socially acceptable, I knew what it was to feel different, alienated and not like everyone else.”

The show starts May 11 on the Showtime network and also stars Rory Kinnear, Harry Treadaway, Reeve Carney, Billie Piper, and Timothy Dalton. Hopefully it’ll make its way here soon as well.
