2013 was a bit of a harsh mistress when it came to the untimely deaths of actors/filmmakers we love. One such dearly departed was James Gandolfini, who will forever be remembered by many people as conflicted mob boss Tony Soprano. Gandolfini passed away suddenly, working right up until his death, which means that even after his passing, new work was still coming out.

Now we’ve finally reached the beginning of the end of that road though, as the first trailer for the last film he ever worked on has just been released. And the fact that The Drop boasts one hell of a cast in Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace, is written by the guy behind Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone and directed by the man behind the incredible Belgian drama Bullhead, means that Gandolfini is probably going to go out on one magnificent high. Tony Soprano would probably have it no other way.

THE DROP is a new crime drama from Michaël R. Roskam, the Academy Award-nominated director of BULLHEAD. Based on a screenplay from Dennis Lehane (MYSTIC RIVER, GONE BABY GONE), THE DROP follows lonely bartender Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) through a covert scheme of funneling cash to local gangsters – “money drops” – in the underworld of Brooklyn bars. Under the heavy hand of his employer and cousin Marv (James Gandolfini), Bob finds himself at the center of a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighborhood’s past where friends, families, and foes all work together to make a living – no matter the cost.

The Drop also stars Noomi Rapace, Matthias Schoenaerts, John Ortiz, Ann Dowd, and James Frecheville, and will be… dropping into cinemas on September 19, 2014.

Not too sure about Hardy’s Brooklyn accent, but as a swansong for Gandolfini, this seems worthy
