Nothing is sacred, Internet. NOTHING! A show that made millions of small-sized kids believe that by using their brains they could better any brawn has been remade, and I think I’m still in shock after watching the first trailer. Of course I am talking about MacGyver, my favourite show as a child. This time instead of awesome, super cool, mullet-donning Richard Dean Anderson we have Lucas Till (X-Meh: Apocalypse), a floppy-haired dweeb that even I would have trouble not bullying in the schoolyard. This is, as we are seeing all around us these days, an origin story, set 20 years after the original show, um… That is to say, it’s a re-imagining of our childhood dreams show.
Let’s be honest now and say that the chances of ANY of Mac’s contraptions working without killing a small portion of the immediate population were about as high as Trevor’s chances of marrying, which is a good thing. We were innocent in the 80’s, we didn’t have the internet or, even more damaging, Myth Busters, to tear apart the cool things Mac made. Now we do. I mean this new Twitter generation would laugh at Mac and his adventures with Pete Thornton. Sit them down in a room and make them watch the original show, see what happens! This is probably why they have swapped out Mac Mullet with a geeky kid and shiny top Thornton has been swapped out for muscle man George Eads (whose character in CSI spent most episodes crying like 90s man).
Okay, I am going on a bit here, so have a watch and see what you think!
There. You saw it. I am still undecided. Mac is obviously younger, but I don’t know if that will allow me to accept his very cocky attitude. In the original show he was a very soft and thoughtful man. I mean I wonder what Mac’s nemesis Murdock would look like in this reinvention of the show. Mark Zuckerberg? Going to attack the Mac with thumbs downs? I shudder to think. Still, I think the oldie in me is lashing out and I am confident Lucas Till will bring something new that this generation will enjoy. Whether I do is a different story. Seven years with Richard Dean Anderson is a hard thing to let go of…
