I won’t lie to you guys. The only reason I checked out this trailer for The Tale of Tales, a dark-fantasy film I had never heard of before, was for the NSFW tag that went with. But thanks be to my reptilian brain that I did, or I wouldn’t have known about this weirdly haunting little piece of beautiful madness.
Italian filmmaker Matteo Garrone’s star studded bid to win the Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, The Tale of Tales is for everybody who turns up their noses at the kiddie-friendliness of Disney-styled fantasy movies, and would much rather see Salma Hayek devour the engorged heart of some gigantic salamander-like monster. Oh and let’s not forget Vincent Cassel cavorting on a tiny hillock of drunk naked ladies. Did I mention that this was NSFW?
Check out the trailer below which gives very little away in terms of story – it’s based on a collection of 17th century fairy tales and folk poems by Italian author Giambattista Basile – but shows off the film’s wonderful visuals and eery music. Also, creepy underwater albino kids.
The Tale of Tales also stars John C. Reilly and Toby Jones. It will be debuting at Cannes next month.
