I’m confused. I was certainly never much of a fan of Taylor Kitsch in X-Men: Origins Wolverine, but to have him recast with Colin Firth? And at least he’s a thief now, but where’s the playing ca-

Oh wait. No, not that Gambit. This is the remake of the 1966 Michael Caine crime comedy, which certainly makes a lot more sense as I just couldn’t figure out why Remy Lebaau was now a middle-aged English dude trying to get a cowgirl Cameron Diaz in on a con.

Based on the 1966 British caper comedy which starred Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine, “Gambit” centers on Harry Deane (Firth), a London art curator who enlists a Texas Rodeo Queen (Diaz) in a scheme to con the richest man in England.

Having been dragged to many a chick flick in my time, I’ve developed a rather large liking of Colin Firth. I love his completely droll wit and he and Hugh Grant are still responsible for possibly the funniest fight scene I’ve ever seen. And when it comes to Alan Rickman, well it’s Alan Rickman, there really should be no need to say more than that to impress you. Then there are the Coen Bros, who can write a sharp crime caper like no other.

So it’s a just a pity that within a few seconds of appearing on screen on this trailer, Cameron Diaz already had me grinding my teeth to paste. With the exception of eardrum destroying Southern twang, I like what I’m seeing here. Yes, it’s probably not going to be the greatest film ever, but it certainly looks amusing enough
