As much as I enjoyed Olympus Has Fallen, the other “terrorists take over the White House” movie this year, I won’t quite describe it as fun. Edge of your seat, non-stop action, definitely, but a movie that will leave your sphincter twitching like a rabbit’s nose from all the tension way more than it will have you fist pumping while wearing a grin that threatens to bisect your skull.

But the same can’t be said for Roland Emmerich’s White House Down, which seems to be playing up the mismatched buddy dynamic to full fun effect as can be seen in this new 4-minute long extended trailer. Oh and explosions, there are also lots and lots of explosions.

In Columbia Pictures’ “White House Down,” Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it’s up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.

I have to admit, somewhere between Channing Tatum going back to high school with Jonah Hill and taking off his clothes with Matthew McConnaughey, I suddenly got over my Tatum hatred (Tatred?). Yes, he’s still a goofball who relies on his pretty boy six-pack to do most of the work, but he’s now become a charming and fun goofball who relies on his pretty boy six-pack to do most of the work.

I don’t expect him to be holding his own against the Phillip Seymour Hoffmans and Daniel Day-Lewises of Hollywood anytime soon, but that clearly isn’t Tatum’s goal, as he just seems to be having fun with his roles. And throwing him together with a just as game Jamie Foxx, and adding in director Roland Emmerich’s flair for spectacular destruction and this is definitely one I’m looking forward to.

White House Down destroys Washington DC on June 28, 2013.

I’ll admit that I was not interested in this movie at all, but this trailer has changed my mind. It looks fun and explosive – exactly what I want from a cinema experience!
