Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Old Caesar light

I’ve got to give it to the marketing folks for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, because unlike some of 2014’s other big blockbusters, they don’t seem to subscribe to the “SHOW DEM ALL DA SCENEZ FROM DA MOVIE” methodology (Oh, hey, Amazing Spider-Man 2! We were just talking about you). The first trailer for the anticipated sequel was all about setting spines a-tingling with a foreboding tone, instead of just blurting out all the movie’s details.

Now a new TV spot has come out, focusing on the apes (because who cares about those hairless pink things anywhere) and once again building a feeling of eerie dread for the war to come.

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

Along with the new TV spot, a new poster has also been unveiled, and I’ll be damned if those aren’t the saddest little ape eyes I’ve ever seenAND DAMN IT WHO IS CUTTING ONIONS IN HERE?!

If the tone of these trailers and posters are anything to go by – not forgoing the character drama in favour of empty bombast – then director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In) will definitely be up to the not so easy task of equaling Rupert Wyatt’s surprisingly effective first film

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes stars Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Kirk Acevedo, Enrique Murciano, and Judy Greer, and will be starting war in cinemas on July 11, 2014.
