Ant-Man_Trailer 1_2015.04.13_1

Let’s just be honest with each other for a second here: the first trailer for Ant-Man blew it. After a nearly flawless run when it came to building hype through incredible trailers, Marvel finally dropped the teeny tiny shrunken down ball with a tone-deaf, far too serious preview that showed off virtually none of the cool action we’ve been hearing about. The fact that the character was already a hard sell to non-hardcore fans meant that it essentially just left everybody with mild feeling of “Meh” at best.

That all changes now. A new trailer was released last night, showing all the vibrant personality, humour, insane action, humour, crazy characters – did I mention humour? – that you would expect from a movie directed by Peyton Reed, written by Adam McKay (based on Edgar Wright’s original script) and starring Paul Rudd. In short, it’s f-ANT-astic! And I don’t even care how bad that pun was, because I’m too busy watching the trailer again!

The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man.” Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

NOW THAT’S THE ANT-MAN TRAILER I WAS WAITING FOR! That last bit of the trailer with Thomas the Tank Engine just slayed me! And how cool does all that size-changing fisticuffs look? Hell, they even threw in some cool ants to keep the kids happy!

Along with that great trailer, EW also has this fantastic shot of Corey Stoll’s villainous Darren Cross in his Yellowjacket suit. Click on the pic and enlarge it, and you’ll actually notice that the bad guy is not just shadow-boxing/shadow-plasma-cannoning, but is actually faced off against a shrunk down Ant-Man.

And according to Reed, despite what the pic shows us, the fight between Ant-Man and Yellowjacket is a pretty evenly matched one even though they have very different approaches to battle.

“Hank Pym’s Ant-Man suit doesn’t have a single weapon, whereas Yellowjacket is armed with plasma cannons.”

“Ant-Man is very fast when he’s small. Also, when he shrinks, he increases his density, so he’s got increased strength.”

In other words, Ant-Man took those lessons to heart and is now trying to punch everything.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige also spoke to /Film about Ant-Man‘s place in the MCU. If you didn’t know, whereas the first Avengers movie marked the end of Marvel’s Phase 1, it’s actually Ant-Man and not Avengers: Age of Ultron that acts as the end of Phase 2. So why put the movie there, especially since placing it before Age of Ultron would have allowed Marvel to hew much closer to the source material and actually have the first Ant-Man, Hank Pym (played by Michael Douglas), create Ultron just like in the comics? Was it that with all their big plans Ant-Man was simply a late development?

“It’s not [an after thought]. The truth is the phases mean a lot to me and some people but…Civil War is the start of Phase Three. It just is. And Ant-Man is a different kind of culmination of Phase Two because it very much is in the MCU.

You meet new characters and you learn about Hank Pym and his lineage with the MCU over the years. But at the same time, it also picks up the thread of Age of Ultron in terms of heroes – major heroes, Avengers – coming from unexpected places. Whether it’s prison in the case of Scott Lang or being a very disgruntled Sokovian Twins as Wanda and Pietro are in Age of Ultron. And in that way it connects a lot.

Also, Hank Pym’s attitude towards Avengers, towards S.H.I.E.L.D, and kind of the cinematic universe in general, is much more informed after the events of Age of Ultron, and in a certain way, before the events of Civil War.”

As /Film surmises, could it be that Pym, who is supposedly going to be revealed to be one of the secret architects of the MCU and seemingly has very strong feelings about how people are not supposed to have “godlike power”, is perhaps a major influence that helps kickstart the ideological battle between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark in Captain America: Civil War? In the comics, it’s Reed Richards that sort of helps to spur on Stark’s ideas of a Superhero Registration Act in response to a great disaster brought about by brash young heroes with more power than sense. But since Richards is over in Fox’s stable and off-limits to Marvel, could they be using Pym as his stand-in? It sure as hell makes sense to me.

We’re still a few months away from finding out whether all this speculation is just fanboy ravings or has some truth to it, as Ant-Man is only scheduled for release on July 17, and after that trailer it’s going to be a long few months.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that Thomas the Tank Engine would not only be part of a Marvel movie, but that it would be awesome.
