Look, let’s not be coy here: The first trailer for Alex “Dark City” Proyas’ Gods of Egypt, his upcoming fantasy-adventure based on Egyptian mythology, was already a shiny golden turd mountain. Then it was pointed out that it was a shiny golden turd mountain almost exclusively occupied by white people. It was not a good look.

But while there’s no fixing inconsiderate and borderline-insulting Hollywood casting practices, something could at least be done about that first godawful trailer. And it looks like Proyas and the folks over at Lionsgate have actually done it!

A new trailer has been recently released and instead of just focusing on silly golden birdmen versions of Gerard Butler and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau throwing CGI at each other, this one takes things a bit more seriously and at least sells the story and character drama element much better. It still looks pretty cheesy in places – and the green screening seems very obvious – but at least it’s trying!

Check it out below!

Magic, monsters, gods and madness reign throughout the palaces and pyramids of the Nile River Valley in this action-adventure inspired by the classic mythology of Egypt.  With the survival of mankind hanging in the balance, an unexpected hero takes a thrilling journey to save the world and rescue his true love.  Set (Gerard Butler), the merciless god of darkness, has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict.  With only a handful of heroic rebels opposing Set’s savage rule, Bek (Brenton Thwaites), a bold and defiant mortal, enlists the aid of powerful god Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) in an unlikely alliance against the evil overlord.  As their breathtaking battle against Set and his henchmen take them into the afterlife and across the heavens, both god and mortal must pass tests of courage and sacrifice if they hope to prevail in the spectacular final confrontation.

Gods of Egypt also stars Brenton Thwaites, Chadwick Boseman, Elodie Yung, Courtney Eaton and Geoffrey Rush. It is scheduled for release on February 26, 2016.

  1. Watched without sound (headset at home and I am at work), but it does look quite interesting!
