heart of the sea

It’s been a few months since I reported on the first trailer for the upcoming Ron Howard flick In the Heart of the Sea and this time we have a bit more to go on. This trailer has a lot more action, a lot more sushi, and a lot more Chris Hemsworth using his ‘Thor speak’ to encourage and motivate his men.

The first teaser gave us little in way of motivation for the sperm whale (stop giggling Trevor) and why it has such a CHIP on its shoulder (see what I did there?) but after watching this I think we can agree the men had it coming to them. So what’s it all about? Here’s the official synopsis and then the trailer:

In 1820, crewmen (Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy) aboard the New England vessel Essex face a harrowing battle for survival when a whale of mammoth size and strength attacks with force, crippling their ship and leaving them adrift in the ocean. Pushed to their limits and facing storms, starvation, panic and despair, the survivors must resort to the unthinkable to stay alive. Their incredible tale ultimately inspires author Herman Melville to write “Moby-Dick.”

Looks very CGI heavy but with the grainy treatment also rather awesome. Hemsworth looks like he’ll be acting as, well, Hemsworth and I see nothing wrong with that. Others joining him on their doomed mission are Cillian Murphy (Inception), Ben Wishaw (Cloud Flatless Atlas), Tom Holland (The Impossible) and Brendan Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow), so quite the troop.

It looks like it could be quite a bit of fun, even with some rather over-used elements (like the sound effect of the whale, Jurassic Park/World anyone?) and I like that most of the story takes place after the whale has gone postal. What I don’t like though is how they a pushing the ‘based on true events’. That’s like comparing the events of The Avengers to the nuking of Hiroshima and smacks of adding depth to something that is straight out an action movie. Then again I may be thinking that because I’m only on coffee number 2.

In the Heart of the Sea will drift to you on 11 December.

  1. As someone with an obsession with Moby Dick (yes I know how that sounds), I CANNOT wait anymore for this!
