The first trailer for Oscar nominated filmmaker Jason Reitman’s (Juno, Up In the Air) latest flick Men, Women & Children was very intriguing. Yes, it contained no dialogue and almost zero clues about the narrative, but yeah, definitely intriguing. Now a second trailer is here, and they’re actually giving us some story and quite a bit of dialogue (how generous!).

And from this new trailer we can now see that the film will play out almost like Reitman’s version of Paul Haggis’ Crash – a star-studded drama with crisscrossing individual story arcs tied together through a central theme. Only instead of Crash‘s racial tension, here we have parents that are paranoid about the internet, kids who make all the wrong choices when it comes to the internet, a couple who rather prefers the intimate company of people they find on the internet, etc. It’s very internety (I was quite surprised at the lack of Grumpy Cat).

It also looks like it could make for either a very topical, hard-hitting drama about the (lack of) connectivity of modern society, or an overblown, misguided sermon on the pitfalls of technology. It all depends on whether Reitman has rediscovered the zinging form of his earlier works or not. According to the early reviews coming out of TIFF, the jury is still out on the movie and the man. Check the trailer out and decide for yourself.

MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN follows the story of a group of high school teenagers and their parents as they attempt to navigate the many ways the internet has changed their relationships, their communication, their self-image, and their love lives. The film attempts to stare down social issues such as video game culture, anorexia, infidelity, fame hunting, and the proliferation of illicit material on the internet. As each character and each relationship is tested, we are shown the variety of roads people choose – some tragic, some hopeful – as it becomes clear that no one is immune to this enormous social change that has come through our phones, our tablets, and our computers.

Men, Women & Children stars Kaitlyn Dever, Rosemarie DeWitt, Ansel Elgort, Jennifer Garner, Judy Greer, Dean Norris and Adam Sandler. It is scheduled for release internationally on October 16, 2014, while it only hits local screens on January 16, 2015.
