Jack O’Connell. Write that name down. There may be a test later. And by “test”, I mean that when your friends talk about that new big name movie star that looks to be winning all the awards, you can say that you knew about him long ago while smiling smugly.

The Scottish actor has not just been popping up in several productions lately, but has been consistently stolen the show and received nothing but the highest of praise from everybody that has seen his work. It become almost universally accepted now that its only a matter of time before he walks away with one of the industry’s major awards, and Unbroken may just be the movie to do it.

Directed by Angelina Jolie and based on the triumphant true story of not just a war hero but also and Olympic hero, Unbroken seems on the surface to be the very definition of Oscar bait. And, well, it is. But looking at this trailer, it also looks to be an incredibly epic and moving tale showing the resiliency of the human spirit. And yes, Darryn, there are also lots of planes and explosions and even sharks.

Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie directs and produces “Unbroken,” an epic drama that follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp.

Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand’s (“Seabiscuit: An American Legend”) enormously popular book, “Unbroken” brings to the big screen Zamperini’s unbelievable and inspiring true story about the resilient power of the human spirit.

Starring alongside O’Connell are Domhnall Gleeson and Finn Wittrock as Phil and Mac—the airmen with whom Zamperini endured perilous weeks adrift in the open Pacific—Garrett Hedlund and John Magaro as fellow POWs who find an unexpected camaraderie during their internment, Alex Russell as Zamperini’s brother, Pete, and in his English-language feature debut, Japanese actor Miyavi as the brutal camp guard known only to the men as “The Bird.”

The Unbroken was co-written by Ethan and Joel Coen (No Country For Old Men, Fargo, The Big Lebowski), and also stars Domhnall Gleeson, Miyavi, Garrett Hedlund and Finn Wittrock. It is scheduled for release on December 25, 2014.
