Everly-SalmaHayek

Die Hard with a lady” sounds like one of those facepalm-worthy elevator pitches that some exec in a suit with a far greater interest in buying his next yacht than making a good film might come up with. And in fact, that may very well be how Everly, the latest film from director Joe Lynch (Knights of Badassdom, Wrong Turn 2: Dead End) started its life. But the end result is apparently anything but a cheap cash-in.

Swapping out a barefoot and bloody Bruce Willis at Christmas time for a barefoot and bloody Selma Hayek at Christmas time, Everly simply blew the shoes off pretty much everybody else who saw it when it debuted at Fantastic Fest last year. Based on the buzz, it doesn’t quite match up to the instant classic status of the 1988 John McTiernan directed actioner from which it borrows so many cues, but Everly is being touted as one of the most badass action flicks of the year. Oh and did I mention it stars a red-hot Salma Hayek who apparently has discovered the Fountain of Youth as she seemingly stopped aging after sometime during the Clinton administration.

As you can see from the trailer, it brings in the “trapped in a building aspect” of Die Hard, but then goes slightly Kill Bill with a never-ending parade of Yakuza goons and colourful assassins for Ms Hayek to dispatch with violent glee.

It’s Christmas time, but all is not well in the world of Everly (Salma Hayek). A call girl by trade, Everly has turned against her gangster boss Taiko (Hiroyuki Watanabe) and become a police informant. In response, Taiko has put out a hit on Everly and her family. Soon, every criminal in town wants to cash in. Everly’s survival instincts quickly kick in as she matches wits and firepower with Taiko and a seemingly endless stream of killers.

Everly will be out on VOD on January 23, 2015, before hitting international theatres on February 27, 2015.
